Youth Voter Engagement and Participation in Canadian Elections

09/01/2001

On the whole, young Canadians don’t vote. At a time when voter turnout is on the decline among all age groups in most western democracies, 18 to 24 year olds “lead the pack” in turning away from the ballot box. In response to this situation, the Forum undertook a research and consultation project to determine ways in which young Canadians can be re-engaged with the voting process. The project involved representatives of Canada’s youth in identifying the reasons why young Canadians are not voting and in producing a set of actions to address this low voter turnout.
