Implications for Canada of a High-valued Canadian Dollar

On January 30, 2008, the Public Policy Forum held a one-day conference in Toronto to discuss the causes, perspectives, economic implications, and possible measures to be taken in relation with the Canadian dollar’s recent rapid rise. Approximately 70 participants attended the conference from the private sector, non-governmental organizations, academia, professional associations, and various levels of governments. Jodi White, President of the PPF opened the conference and offered introductory remarks while Michael Murphy, Executive Vice-President, Canadian Chamber of Commerce, delivered the luncheon speech.

The conference considered explanations for the dollar’s rapid rise, implications for the Canadian economy, and how businesses and governments are responding to the situation.
