A House Undivided: Making Senate Independence Work
After its first taste of independent status last spring, the Senate returns on September 27, with more independent appointments still to come. But how will an independent Senate work in practice given its partisan past, and what non-constitutional rule changes will need to be made? To help map out the best path ahead, the Public Policy Forum asked two of the most successful Senators of the past generation – one Liberal, the other Conservative – to consider what it will take for the new-look Senate to succeed. The event will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss the analysis and recommendations proposed by former Senators Michael Kirby and Hugh Segal. The discussion will be co-moderated by Susan Delacourt and Peter Van Dusen.
