Facing the Science Challenge: Recruiting the Next Generation of Public Service Scientists

On a daily basis, government officials rely on scientific research to make decisions that will affect Canadians’ health and safety and to ensure the economic competitiveness of businesses operating in Canada. But the government of Canada is facing a challenge: it must develop strategies for recruitment of and knowledge transfer to the next generation of research scientists. To better understand how the government might address this challenge, this report analyzes the characteristics and the working environment of the current research science cohort. It then compares these characteristics to those being sought by potential recruits in order to develop recommendations for recruitment and retention strategies.
