National Innovation Strategy: A Deep Dive with John Kao

When: Friday, September 9, 2011 - 08:30 - 16:00

Where: Toronto, ON

Creating a culture and practice of innovation in Canada is key to our future prosperity. On September 8th and 9th 2011 the Public Policy Forum convened Canada’s top innovation leaders for a two-day session exploring a national innovation agenda for Canada. Helping the Forum to lead this effort was noted innovation activist Dr. John Kao, who facilitated the ‘deep dive’ workshop.

During the program participants took part in a tour of Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone, and had a chance to interact with the world-class young innovators and entrepreneurs who have made Zone a showcase of Canadian innovation. An evening dinner, hosted by Ryerson University President and Vice-Chancellor Sheldon Levy, with invited guests including the Hon. Gary Goodyear (Minister of State, Science and Technology, Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario), allowed for open discussion of the potential path forward for innovation in Canada.

The following day featured the immersive workshop, led by Dr. Kao. The day-long session brought forward several prominent issues which must be addressed in the creation of a Canadian innovation agenda, including: the need to better network and unify innovation-related organizations, a requirement to engage top government and private leaders to steward the agenda, and a call to reach out to younger generations to take part in ongoing innovation dialogue.
