The Expanding Mandate of the Ontario Ombudsman (Sarnia)

When: Wednesday, November 18, 2015

Where: Sarnia, Ontario

On December 9, 2014 the Ontario government passed legislation that expands the jurisdiction of the Ontario Ombudsman to include municipalities, universities and school boards. Under the Public Sector and MPP Accountability and Transparency Act, 2014, the Ombudsman will begin accepting, investigating and resolving complaints about school boards as of September 1, 2015, and municipalities and universities as of January 1, 2016.

The Public Policy Forum and the Office of the Ombudsman have partnered to engage and educate key stakeholders about what this will mean for these sectors, to listen to suggestions and to respond to questions. The Ombudsman’s Office has tasked the PPF with leading this process, as an experienced and neutral convenor of public policy discussions across Canada, so that participants may feel free to bring forward their concerns about how the Ombudsman’s new mandate will affect them.

The findings of this roundtable will inform the agenda of a full day conference in Toronto on February 9.
