Expanding the mandate of the Ontario Ombudsman - Ottawa

On December 9, 2014 the Ontario government passed legislation that expands the jurisdiction of the Ontario Ombudsman to include municipalities, universities and school boards. Under the Public Sector and MPP Accountability and Transparency Act, 2014, the Ombudsman will begin accepting, investigating and resolving complaints about school boards as of September 1, 2015, and municipalities and universities as of January 1, 2016.

The Public Policy Forum is convening a small group of representatives from municipalities and universities to discuss this legislative change and identify concerns about this expanding mandate. The findings of this roundtable will inform a one day conference for stakeholders from all three of the Ombudsman’s new areas of oversight.
