Aboriginal Participation in Major Resources Development Opportunities (Ottawa)

When: Tuesday, May 22, 2012 - 11:30 - 14:00

Where: Ottawa

While Canada’s natural resources sector is experiencing high levels of growth and new opportunities to develop and market products around the world, the success and viability of any major project will depend upon the ability of business leaders to work in collaboration with local communities at an early stage of the process.

On May 22nd, with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, the Forum hosted Aboriginal Participation in Major Resources Development Opportunities, a dialogue on the opportunities and challenges to effective engagement of Canada’s Aboriginal population in the development of major resources sector projects.

The meeting engaged a select group of senior, multi-sectoral leaders from Canada’s Aboriginal communities and Canada’s natural resources sector, focusing on key questions of how we can improve Aboriginal engagement in these opportunities. A research paper prepared by AANDC was circulated in advance to provide a starting point for discussion.

The meeting was convened under the Public Policy Forum Rule, whereby all comments will be made on a not-for-attribution basis.
