Canada's Public Service in the 21st Century
Canada's Public Service: A vital national institution
All Canadians have a stake in the effectiveness and vitality of the federal public service. With this in mind, the PPF launched a new project in September 2006, called Canada’s Public Service in the 21st Century. The project addresses the issues and choices facing Canada’s federal public service and provides viable solutions to meet its challenges.
During a 2-year period, the PPF gathered data on jurisdictional comparisons, workforce attitudes and historical information about previous reforms. We engaged many people across the country who share an interest in and respect for the institution.
- Based on a series of national roundtables, we produced a report entitled A Vital National Institution: What a Cross-Section of Canadians Think about Canada’s Public Service.
- Interviews with prominent Canadians about key leadership issues led to the report, Leading by Example. Roundtable discussions with private sector CEOs and union representatives provided further insights.
- The final product – a report entitled Destination: Excellence – summarizes our findings, articulates a set of principles to guide the public service and puts forward 10 recommendations.
The challenges facing the public service are becoming increasingly complex. To remain a vibrant and modern national institution, the public service must continue to evolve and adapt. The PPF will continue to monitor the public service’s progress on the issues raised in our report: leadership, trust, relationships and accountability.
